Why are clipping services Illegal?
Are coupon clipping sites illegal? In a word - Yes. Here's why...
Nearly all grocery coupons specifically say they are VOID if sold. Owners of clipping services and people who sell coupons on eBay try to get around this by saying that buyers are "paying for a person's time, not the coupon(s)". If you use a coupon that has been sold, you are, in essence, using a now invalid coupon. This is, unequivocally, fraud.
Furthermore, regarding the claim of only 'paying for their time/effort to clip and send', makes little sense. If customers are not purchasing the coupons based on value of the coupon (because they are not 'buying' the coupons, they claim), the only way a person or company can really make any money is to sell hundreds of coupons. Do hundreds of transactions. And that begs the question: Where are they getting them from? Are they obtaining them legally? Or are they reproduced, stolen...?
- Manufacturers have lowered the value of their coupons. (This is to offset the higher redemption number, due to individuals obtaining and redeeming dozens of the same coupon.)
- Manufacturers have limited the number of the same (like) coupon that can be used by one customer.
